Don’t Miss Out on This Valuable Household Item at an Estate Sale

When it comes to estate sales, they are a fantastic place to find high-quality vintage pieces at great prices. However, for those new to shopping second-hand, these sales can be overwhelming. To make the most of an estate sale, it’s important to know what you’re looking for, how much you’re willing to spend, and how to identify quality items. One of the most prized items you shouldn’t overlook at an estate sale is porcelain plates and tableware. These items are small enough to fit in a tote bag but can add a touch of elegance to your home.

Porcelain is often mistaken for ceramic, but it is technically a type of ceramic made from fine-grained kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures. This process makes porcelain more durable, harder, and more resistant to stains and scratches than standard ceramics. While porcelain is not damage-proof, it is still a valuable find at estate sales.

How to determine whether your prized piece is porcelain

To identify porcelain tableware, there are a few tricks you can use. Porcelain pieces are generally thinner and somewhat translucent, allowing light to pass through. You can test this by passing your fingers between a light source and the plate to see if you can see a shadow. Porcelain also feels colder and lighter than other pottery. Additionally, porcelain has a delicate appearance and is prone to gray marks from silverware.

When selecting porcelain tableware, consider its use. If it’s for decoration, materials may not matter as much. However, if you plan to use it for dining, test for lead in vintage glaze and avoid using any metallic features in the microwave to prevent fire hazards.
