Fixer To Fabulous Stars: Why You Shouldn’t Follow Current Trends When Designing Your Home

Keeping track of home design trends can be an enjoyable and enlightening experience. Over the years, we have experimented with numerous inspiring interior design trends. However, it is important to remember that following trends should not be the sole guide for decorating your home. Jenny and Dave Marrs, the renowned renovators from HGTV’s “Fixer to Fabulous,” emphasize this point to homeowners.

“We do not focus on trends because we want our homeowners to create a space they truly love,” Jenny explained to The Tennessean. Many people misunderstand interior trends by thinking they are the ultimate authority on home design. Trends are meant to inspire new ideas and layouts that you may not have previously considered. Some trends may work well in your home, while others may not. Trying to follow every trend can lead to a lack of personal style and self-expression in your home.

This also means that there will always be something to renovate. Home design trends evolve constantly as designers seek innovative ways to help individuals express their styles. The Marrs recommend using design trends as inspiration to discover what truly resonates with you. Define your style, incorporate it into your home, and you will have a space that you can cherish for years to come.

Don’t worry about your home’s resale value, either

Jenny and Dave Marrs often see homeowners hesitating to make changes to their homes out of fear of diminishing resale value. While resale value is a consideration when selling your home, it should not dictate every decision you make as a homeowner. “It’s perfectly fine to make your home reflect your style. Feel free to take design risks that bring you joy,” Jenny advised Better Homes and Gardens. Your space should be a reflection of you, not a projection of what future buyers may like. Real estate trends, like design trends, are constantly changing. What may boost your home’s value today could decrease it in the future. It’s better to make changes that you love now and consider resale value later.

Of course, investing in your home’s future is important. Some trends, such as high-end window treatments or quartz countertops, are known to increase home value. If you love these trends and they add value to your home, it’s a win-win. However, do not avoid making changes to your home just because you are unsure of how it will impact resale value. Creating a space that truly reflects your style is more important. According to the Marrs, it’s about finding a balance between freely changing your decor and cultivating a timeless style in your home.
