Joanna Gaines’ Clever Use of a Sink to Create the Illusion of Space in a Small Bathroom

When decorating a small bathroom, limited space can be an issue. Joanna Gaines reveals a simple bathroom hack to make a small vanity appear larger: adding a vessel sink. As the star of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper,” Gaines has tackled design dilemmas of all shapes and sizes, always finding creative solutions.

In a “Fixer Upper” Web-Exclusive, Gaines shares that a vessel sink can add spa-like style and create the illusion of extra counter space. By sitting directly on top of the vanity, the vessel sink provides negative space that makes the counters seem larger. Pairing the sink with a floating shelf for everyday items further maximizes the space in a small bathroom.

Things to know before choosing a vessel sink

Unlike traditional sinks that are mounted underneath a countertop, a vessel sink’s basin sits on top of the vanity. This design creates the appearance of a larger counter space. Installing a vessel sink may require new countertops and a faucet with a longer spout due to the sink’s height. While the swap may require some effort, the stylish and space-efficient results make it a worthwhile DIY project.
