Keep Unwanted Pests Out of Your Garage with This Popular Scent

Cinnamon is a popular spice known for its enticing aroma. While it may attract airport travelers and mall-goers to unhealthy foods, the spicy oils in cinnamon can be irritating to humans and animals. This makes it a natural pest control remedy. The comforting scent of cinnamon can help keep unwanted pests out of your garage, although simply leaving a few cinnamon sticks may not be effective.

Cinnamon oil has been found to repel snakes, ants, mosquitoes, cockroaches, ticks, and other pests. However, studies suggest that the oil needs to be highly concentrated and sprayed as an airborne vapor to be effective. For ants and snakes, direct application of the oil is recommended to disrupt their senses and repel them. It is important to use caution when handling cinnamon oil, as it can be irritating to the skin and eyes and toxic to pets and fish.

How to use cinnamon oil as a repellent

To create a homemade cinnamon oil repellent, mix ½ teaspoon of cinnamon oil with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray directly on pests or around areas where they enter or hide in your garage. Reapply frequently as the oils dissipate. Cinnamon oil should be part of a comprehensive pest control strategy that includes eliminating food sources, hiding places, and sealing entry points in your garage.
