The Most Popular Flowers in Every Region of the Country

Roses are the most popular type of flower in the United States, but when you look at the favorite flowers chosen by gardeners in each state, it’s clear that roses are not the only beloved bloom nationwide. The preferred flowers vary significantly across the country, with neighboring states sometimes having different top choices. For example, while roses are the most popular flower in Louisiana, tulips are the preferred bloom in Texas to the west.

A state’s geographical location and climate do influence its favorite flower, but the winners of this title are not always confined to specific regions. Roses are popular in states with hot, humid climates like Mississippi and Florida, but they are also well-liked in colder northern states like New York and Illinois. Alstroemerias are loved by states on opposite sides of the country, such as Massachusetts and California, as well as Michigan, perhaps because this beautiful flower adds a special touch to coastal gardens.

Marigolds, hydrangeas, and sunflowers are other favorites

The rose is by far the most beloved flower in the United States, being the top choice in 10 states, which is five more than the second most popular flower, marigolds. Marigolds are becoming increasingly common in gardens nationwide, possibly due to their ease of growth if you avoid common mistakes. Interestingly, this preference does not necessarily correspond to states’ proximity to one another; Delaware, Wisconsin, and Colorado all have a love for marigolds. Following marigolds, hydrangeas are highly favored, along with alstroemerias and sunflowers.

Some plants are only popular in a few states, like snapdragons, tulips, and lilies. Certain unique flowers are favored by specific states, such as orchids in Hawaii and lavender in Pennsylvania.
